A Dummy's guide for B School Selection...
OK… it’s that time of the year again when Binu Ninan starts getting calls from all parts of
“Hi Binu, I am
“Hi Binu, what is the size of the toilets in your hostel? I consider it a very important criteria to select which IIM I’m going to”
“Hi Binu, I haven’t even written CAT, but if I write n if I get a call and if I convert them all, which IIM must I choose?”
Ok… cut the crap.. I know you guys have worked hard, your pictures have been plastered on the news papers by TIME, IMS and all the other CAT coaching centers as the CEO’s of tomorrow, your friends are jealous of you, your juniors ask u for autographs.. fine. But all this information, is it necessary to select the right B School that u wanna join?
Fortunately or unfortunately I didn’t have the option to select which IIM I had to go to cuz I had only 1 call. However after coming to this insti, there are a couple of factors which I believe are important while you guys make the decision. So take out our pen n paper n start noting down…
- Placements, Placements!! :
Ok, the infra may be bad, the location might be obscure and the weather might be terrible, however you must be willing to live in a shit hole for 2 years if the placement rocks. In this factor it is quite important to go beyond the headlines. Do not focus on the slot 0 placement getters (I hope u guys have done
Another important criteria is the Alumni network. Remember that you will not be in the same company till your deathbed and its not naukri or monster that’s gonna help u grow in your career path. Hence try to find which college has the best Alumni network with active job postings so that you can easily go from one firm to the other.
Needless to say, look at the average salary rather than the top salary. Also try to find out the number of offers made by different firms rather than whether a specific guy has got a mega offer. The number of offers gives u an idea of how the company perceives the college.
- To Specialize or not:
There are some univs which start with a specialized course for the 2 years. Be very careful once u make that decision. You and I know that we were fresh from college when the CAT hit us and we somehow made it to this stage. We don’t know anything about business or which function to join. In such a situation it’s a safer bet to join a generalized course rather than a specialized one. However if u know quite a lot about a function, you may join it.
Moreover try to look for those univs which allow you to learn all the subjects you want in the first year, so that you have a decent idea about the different functions when you go into summers and by the time u reach 2nd year u can specialize and make the career choice.
- Infra? Is it that important?
Ok, this question might be very important if I am talking about a Medical college or an engineering college because u need good equipment and labs to experiment. But for an MBA institute, what is this big noise being made about infra? What difference does it make if you have a Wi-Fi campus and u can carry laptops? Maybe u can watch movies in the classroom instead of the hostel rooms, but otherwise its not a big deal.
What is more important is the course content and more importantly The level of industry interaction you get. Lets be frank here, MBA is not math, and neither can it be taught in classrooms. A consultant from a top notch firm earning 20 lakhs PA couldn’t run my neighborhood kirana store properly if he wanted to. Hence it is very important to get to know what the level of industry exposure u can get thru:
- Profs with industrial experience
- Courses being conducted by the industry
- Number of live projects/ case studies/ b school competitions u can participate
Finally, all that I have to say is that you guys have come this far. If u can get into the top 3 IIMs, trust me in more than one sense you have made it. You will get variety of options and companies which you can choose from. So just chill, call up your friends n seniors and get an objective view. Most importantly make an informed choice and trust me you will never regret it..
All the best for your GD/PIs!!!
